Easter Flowers - What To Do After Easter?
|
Flowers are such a joy to receive at Easter. Freshly
cut arrangements look so beautiful set out in vases. Some people
enjoy their flowers so much that they want to keep them and the
memories they hold. There are some things you can do to make them
last for years to come.
Air drying.
Be sure the flowers have not opened fully when you start this. It
may take some time and trying before you know which flowers dry the
best. Out of the arrangements I’ve had, baby’s breath, daisies,
roses, and carnations look well as dried flowers. Use a rubber band
to secure the flowers at the stem. Make a hook out of a paper clip
and put that through the rubber band. Hand these bunches of flowers
in a place in your home where the sun will reach them. It may take a
few weeks before they have dried fully. When the flowers feel crisp
to the touch, they are ready.
Pressed flowers.
Flowers that have been pressed work great as decorations for
bookmarks or even greeting cards. Again, the flowers must not be
fully opened up when you begin pressing and they should be healthy
looking. You want the flowers to keep their shape but flatten. The
most common way to do this is with a heavy book. Be sure you have
the flower positioned in the way you want it before closing the
book. If you will be doing this on a regular basis, assign a few
books you no longer read to use. Place the flower between two sheets
of paper such as onion skin and then in the book. Once you have the
flower in the book and pressed, put some other books on top to add
weight. This also may take several weeks.
Replanting flowers.
Plants will come with information on their label that you'll to make
sure to read. Make sure you replant indoor plants into bigger pots
before they become root-bound. The best time for replanting outdoor
plants is springtime. Use topsoil that is rich in nutrients. When
you are moving the plant for it's original container be careful not
to disturb the root ball. Keep the plant watered at all times as it
is incorporating itself into the new soil. Perennial plants are the
only ones that should be replanted. They will return every year and
add color to your garden.
Make the most of your flower arrangements. There are many ways to
preserve your flowers to be used over and over again.
